广东省科学院广州地理研究所由著名学者竺可桢倡导成立于1958年，前身为中国科学院广州地理研究所，是华南地区唯一的综合性地理科学研究机构。现在，广州地理研究所是广东省科学院18家骨干研究机构之一。

Guangzhou Institute of Geography, Guangdong Academy of Sciences (GIG GDAS) was established in 1958 by famous scholar Zhu, Kezhen, also known as the Guangzhou Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences before 1978. GIG is the only comprehensive geographical science research institution in South China. Now it is one of the 18 major research institutions of Guangdong Academy of Sciences.

 

研究所立足广东省，面向华南和东南亚，聚焦粤港澳大湾区，瞄准经济社会发展的重大战略需求和科学发展前沿目标，开展具有华南热带亚热带地域特色的地理科学综合研究，成为中国地理科学研究体系的重要组成部分，服务、支撑广东省资源环境与可持续发展战略的重要科技力量。研究所的重点研究方向包括：全球变化与区域环境演变、区域协调发展与城市化、地表过程与防灾减灾、国土资源安全与调控机制、地理空间信息技术与应用、以及东南亚地理。

GIG is focusing on geography research in Guangdong province, , and especially in the Great Bay area of Guangdong, Hongkong and Macao. The institute aims to solve major strategic demands of socio-economic development and to study the frontier of geography and environment development. It carries out comprehensive geographical researches related to tropical and subtropical regions in South China. The institute has become an important part of geographical research system in China, and plays a significant role in serving and supporting the natural environment and sustainability of Guangdong. Research topics including:

?Regional coordinated development and urbanization

?Earth surface processes and disaster prevention and reduction

?Territorial resources security and regulation

?Remote sensing and geographic information system

?Southeast Asia geography.

 

研究所有一支高层次、多专业、熟悉科学技术前沿和广东省情的科研队伍。全所职工在职职工300人，其中中国科学院院士1人，中科院百人1人。拥有高级职称53人，博士62人，硕士60人，国家级突出贡献专家1人，广东省突出贡献专家1人，广东省重大行政决策咨询论证专家3人，享受国务院政府特殊津贴专家13人。

GIG has a high-level、multi-disciplinary scientific research team which is familiar with the frontier of science and technology as well as Guangdong province condition. There are 300 employees in the institute, including an academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, and a member of Hundred-Talent Program (Chinese Academy of Science). Among all faculty, 53 of them have senior titles, 62 of them have doctor degrees, 60 of them have master degrees, 1 national expert with outstanding contributions, 1 provincial expert with outstanding contributions of Guangdong, 3 provincial experts of Guangdong decision-making committee, and 13 experts enjoying the Special Government Allowance of the State Council.

 

研究所下设自然地理与资源环境研究部、人文地理与区域发展研究部、遥感与地理信息系统技术应用研究部和广东地理空间规划设计研究院。三个研究部主要承担基础性和应用基础研究，推动地理学科建设和发展。广东地理空间规划设计研究院主要发挥地理科学的学科特色和专业优势，服务国民经济和社会发展的重大需求，开展应用研究、成果转化工作，为广东省政府、各级部门及公众等提供战略和决策咨询、规划设计、评价评估等科技服务。

The institute consists of the Department of physical geography and resource environment research , the Department of human geography and regional developmen, and the Department of remote sensing and GIS application , as well as the Guangdong geospatial planning and design institute(GGPDI). The three research departments mainly undertake basic and applied science research, contribute to the construction and development of Geography. GGPDI carries out applied research and transformation of geographical science and technology achievements. GGPDI provides strategy plan and research、decision-making consultation, territorial spatial planning and ecological environment assessment for government and the public.

 

研究所建设一批社会需求迫切、发挥地理科学优势的科研条件平台和野外科学观测试验平台，包括广东南岭森林生态系统国家野外科学观测研究站、广东省遥感与地理信息系统应用重点实验室、粤港澳大湾区城市群生态系统观测研究站、南方海洋科学与工程广东实验室（广州）海洋遥感大数据应用研究中心、粤港澳大湾区广东省地理科学数据中心、广东省地理空间信息技术与应用公共实验室等。充分利用地理空间信息技术优势，建立广东省资源环境时空大数据云、广东省遥感卫星影像资料库、广东省经济社会信息库、广东省土地利用信息等基础数据库，为科学研究、行业用户、中小企业和创新创业团队提供面向时空大数据的地理科学数据与技术支撑，推进成果转化，助力地理信息产业发展。

The institute is home to Guangdong Nanling National Station for Forest Ecosystem Research and Observation; Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Utilization Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System; The Greater Bay Area Urban Agglomeration Ecosystem Observation and Research Station; Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) Center of Ocean Remote Sensing Big Data Research and Application;  Geographical Science Data Center of Guangdong Province; Guangdong Open Laboratory of Geospatial Information Technology and Application, etc. The institute fully utilize the advantages of geospatial information technology to establish basic databases such as Guangdong resource and environment spatiotemporal big data cloud, Guangdong remote sensing satellite image database, Guangdong Economic and social information database and Guangdong land use information database. These databases could provide geoscience data and technical support for scientific research institute、 industrial users、small and medium-sized enterprises and innovation enterprises, further promoting sci-tech achievements transformation and assisting geographic information industry development.

 

研究所建所以来，承担并完成各类科研项目近5000项，累计获得国家、省部委级和省科学院科技进步奖、自然科学奖等科技成果奖励200项；出版专著、图集130多部，发表论文2500余篇，获得各项知识产权400余项。

Since GIG established, it has undertaken and completed almost 5000 scientific research projects, and has won more than 200 scientific and technological awards such as the Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, Natural Science Awards at the national, provincial, ministerial and GDAS level. There are more than 130 books and atlas, over 2500 research articles have been published, and more than 400 intellectual property rights have been approved.

 

所内主办中文核心学术期刊《热带地理》，研究所是广东省地理学会和广东省地理信息标准化技术委员会的挂靠单位，中国地理学会的常务理事单位。研究所注重公益科普活动开展，是省、市等各级科普教育基地，创作丰富的科学传播作品，走进学校、社区开展丰富多彩的科普活动。

The Chinese core academic journal 《Tropical Geography》 is affiliated with the institute. GIGG is also the home the Geographic Society of Guangdong and Guangdong Geographic Information Standardization Technical Committee, and the executive director of the Geographic Society of China. Being a science popularization education center at both provincial and municipal level, GIG has created rich science works and carried out variety of science popularization education activities in schools and local communities.
